I thought several times about rewriting in Python (or in the Tcl/Tk which I have used more frequently). If this isn't a fully featured programming language, the user cannot create effective, scalable, and maintainable test suites. You will find a copy of TclTutor, a computer-assisted instruction program that covers all of the commands in Tcl, and most of the command options. Starting with a clear picture of the basics, Tcl/Tk covers the variety of tools in this “Swiss army knife” of programming languages, giving you the ability to enhance your programs, extend your application's capabilities, and become a more effective programmer. At the time I didn't envision Tcl being used as a stand-alone programming language, though that is probably the way that most people have used it. Many built-in It has taken the Java world and Microsoft the better part of fifteen years to get this right. The Tcl I would provide an execution framework and API that allowed test objects to be written in C/C++, Java or C#. Fixing those warts would have broken but a small percentage of the extant Tcl code we could see, but meanwhile, Tcl/Tk was already deployed in mission/life-critical uses like running control panel GUIs on oil rigs and Ousterhout wasn't about to fix the warts. A case study: the decision to develop a commercial automated software testing tool with Tcl and Tk and its consequences. I know that it is not elegant but I initially wrote this program for very limited purposes. Tcl/Tk (Resource Command Language/Tool Package) helps make it rapidly and effortless to apply any type of software, from game titles to network analyzers. I expect most LtU readers write compilers in functional languages, and certainly never C. So it has lot of limitations :-(. Newly updated with over 150 pages of material on the latest Tcl extensions, Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Guide is a unique practical tutorial for professional programmers and beginners alike. Chapters 11 through 14 constitute the Tk tutorial. Even in the mainstream, "scripting languages" are probably more popular. Tcl/Tk is a Written from a programmer's viewpoint, Tcl/Tk: A Developer's Information describes how to use Tcl's normal tools and the special functions that make Tcl/Tk strong: like graphics widgets, deals, namespaces, and extensions. How does Tk fit into the picture? It exhibits how to use Tcl/Tk effectively and gives several code examples.
